Sewanee Union Theatre

The Sewanee Union Theatre (lovingly known as just the "SUT") is a centerpiece of the campus community, offering recent Hollywood hits Thursdays - Sundays as well as classic films on Wednesdays, sponsored by the campus Cinema Guild.

Located in the back of Thompson Union, on South Carolina Ave., just off University Ave, the SUT is one of the oldest theatres in the south and has been showing films since the late 1920s. However, the SUT boasts the latest in digital projection, giving the audience a high-def, thoroughly modern picture.

Students, faculty, staff, community members, visitors from across the country--even the world--enjoy its funky spaces, with super-squishy reclining chairs, awesome sound, and the largest screen from Tullahoma to Chattanooga.

Even in today's hyper-inflated entertainment market, the SUT has kept ticket prices super reasonable:

  • $4 for children, youth, and students (up through college!)
  • $5 for adult non-students
  • The SUT accepts credit/debit cards

Moreover, concessions at the SUT won't make you take out another student loan: popcorn and drinks are only $1 and candy is $2.

That means a date at the SUT can be $10 or less for two! At most other cinemas, $10 only buys one ticket for the evening show . . . if you're lucky . . .

And Wednesday night Cinema Guild films are free admission!

During the academic year, the SUT has the following schedule:

  • Wednesdays, 7:30, Cinema Guild classic movie
  • Thursday-Sunday, 7:30, regular feature film

The SUT is usually closed during longer University breaks, although the SUT does show films during the summer on an abbreviated schedule.

The best way to keep up with the SUT is to like the SUT on Facebook or email at! Get the latest news and offers from your favorite local movie theater.
