2008 Pledge

I pledge to uphold human rights through my attitudes and behaviors within
and beyond the Gates of Sewanee. I refuse to allow gender and sex to be
platforms upon which both my personal and political judgments are made. I
will actively support and embody feminist values and ideals by recognizing
the daily struggles of those who suffer at the hand of human inequality at
both the local and global level and declare to act and react accordingly.
I plan to advocate for those who cannot or will not speak for themselves
by using my right to free speech for the purpose of ridding oppressive
silence.

Feminist Pledge, 2007

A feminist believes in the equality of women
and men. A feminist does not passively
accept gender roles or stereotypes. A
feminist questions the restrictions placed
on men and women by society and respects
every individual's right to self-determination.
I pledge to have a feminist consciousness
in my personal life and in my political
decisions and to think both locally and globally.

Senior "FEMINIST PLEDGE" signing, May 2005

The six Women's Studies Concentrators of the class of 2005 wrote the following "Feminist Pledge," which seventy members of the class of 2005 signed at a pizza and beer party at the Alumni House. Signatories were given laminated copies of the pledge and wore red "F" buttons on their gowns at graduation.

Feminist Pledge

I am a feminist.  I pledge to use the power of my education to actualize my feminist ideals.  I will live my life aware of the restrictions traditionally placed on male and female behavior and work to reduce their power over myself and others.  I will respect women as decision-makers.  I will make my political and consumer choices with awareness of their implications for women around the
world.  I will recognize that oppressions intersect, that the interplay of race, class, gender, sexual orientation and nationality create multiple vulnerabilities for women.
