Table of Contents Introduction
Introduction
The Biblical studies and Judaica collections
are among the strongest in the Divinity
Library. In 1988, as a service of the
library, David Hartcompiled a bibliography to introduce new
Hebrew Bible graduate students to the library andto aid us in our research. We
are indebted to David for his time and careful compilationof these resources,
and to Willa Mathis Johnson who did a previous revision of thisbibliography.
After Hart and Johnson, Aurel Ionica revised and enlarged this bibliography. In
1997 Mark Christian revised the bibliography adding new categories
(e.g.,Feminist/Womanist Criticism, Dead Sea Scrolls, Archaeology and Hebrew
Bible Studies,Hebrew Bible/Ancient Near East Texts and Parallels and several
language study divisions)and placing many existing bibliographical divisions
under their respective html rubrics. In 1998, Julye Bidmead redesigned the web
page, completed significant updates to thebibliography expanding the areas of
History of Ancient Israel, Archaeology and HebrewBible Studies, Hebrew
Bible/Ancient Near East Texts and Parallels, Akkadian/SumerianLanguage, and
Feminist Criticism and added the categories Israelite
Religion,Social-Scientific Criticism, Bible Dictionaries, Commentary Series,
and Reference Works tothe list.
The inclusion of scholarly journals is
another recent change inthe web page. Many of these journals are linked
directly to the journal's web page.Pleasebe aware, however, that site addresses
quite often change, are busy, or simply may notfunction properly. Please report
any notable problems associated with these site addressesto the
bibliographer. Future categories of Hebrew Bible studies are currently
inprocess, namely Biblical Exegesis, Literary Criticism, Post-Modern Criticism,
Pentateuch,Historical Books (including Deuteronomic
Historian), Prophets, and WisdomLiterature. Every month, new books
aquired by the Divinity Library in Hebrew Biblescholarship will be listed along
with a short description. Please look for these newchanges to the web site
during the 1999-2000 academic year.
It
is our goal to review and update thisbibliography and we welcome any
suggestions that would make this bibliography betterreflect the needs of those
who use the library. Finally, while call numbers have beenappended to the works
below for the convenience of Vanderbilt patrons, we wish to saywelcome to all
of our guests. While
this bibliography does notclaim to be all inclusive,
our hope is that you will find it both instructive andhelpful.
