CHHT 616 ISSUES IN RECENT AMERICAN CHURCH HISTORY
CH 34 (Mr. Armentrout)

A study of some of the major theological and religious movements in the United States such as ecumenism, the Church of Christ Uniting, bilateral dialogues, Neo-Pentecostalism, the New Evangelicalism, Fundamentalism, Roman Catholicism and Vatican II, liturgical changes, Martin Luther King, Jr., the New Religious Right, the Christian Coalition, the Electronic Church, church-state relations, Megachurches, church renewal, the new theologies – black, feminist, liberation, etc., issues of sexuality, and other issues raised by the class.

The course is designed to enhance the practice of ministry by learning more about recent religious developments and the context of today's church, and by serious reflection on the consequences of these developments for ministry. It is a lecture course.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Reading all the books on the bibliography.
2. A fifteen-page paper on a subject from this period. The topic is to be arranged with the instructor.
3. An outline of an adult education class covering this material and period.

(These papers will not be due until September 1, 2008.)

NOTE: Classes will meet mornings for three weeks, Thursday, June 26 - Wednesday, July 16, 10:00 A.M. – 11:50 A.M. in Room 234. Registration for the course is Wednesday, June 25, Room 212.
