Smith Hall opened in August 2013 as a co-ed residence for mostly first-year students. Smith Hall was named in recognition of a 2012 gift to the University from Herbert E. Smith Sr., C’1903, his wife Lucy, and their son, Herbert E. Smith Jr., C’36, and his wife, Elizabeth “Bibby” Smith. It is built with many local, re-purposed, and renewable resources and is LEED Silver equivalent.
The 90 residents of Smith Hall share gender-specific community bathrooms on each floor. All rooms are carpeted and windows are furnished with blinds.

Room Furnishings (based on a double occupancy room):
- Two Twin XL beds that can be bunked and adjusted in height
- Two desks with chairs
- Two built-in doorless closets (a 4' tension rod may be desirable to hang a curtain)
- Four dressers with two drawers each
- Two bookcases with two shelves each (the bookcases are able to fit on desks or stand alone)
- Towel bars on the back of the room door
- Two waste bins
- One room phone and two Ethernet ports
Smith Hall has several common spaces with comfortable lounge furniture that is great for studying or hanging out with friends. The ground floor common room boasts a large fireplace, while the third floor common room has a large flat screen television and Blu-ray player for students to watch cable TV and movies. There is a community kitchen with an oven, stove top, full sized refrigerator, microwave and toaster, as well as laundry facilities on the ground floor of the building. Residents enjoy the convenience of an elevator. Smith Hall is air-conditioned.
Smith Hall also features a variety of indoor and outdoor study areas and classrooms that can be utilized by faculty and student organizations as meeting spaces.
In the courtyard between Smith and Cannon Halls, there is an outdoor fire pit and grill area. The building has both an indoor bike room and an outdoor covered bike shed located nearby.
