We are excited to share a TENTATIVE schedule for New Student Orientation 2018. We are still putting the final touches on the New Student Orientation 2018 schedule, so you might see an event or two added to the schedule before August 25. A final schedule of events for New Student Orientation 2018 will be provided upon check-in to New Student Orientation. We look forward to seeing you on August 25!

9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Check-In New students and their families pick up orientation information.
9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Move In New students may move into their residence hall room. Proctors will be on hand to assist new students
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Move-In Lunch Break Come as you are and join Vice-Chancellor John McCardell and his wife, Bonnie, for a casual lunch on the McClurg Dining Hall terrace. Drop by anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for a light lunch and a chance to meet other students and families.
3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Orientation Kick-Off The Office of the Dean of Students and Orientation Leader staff welcome new students to orientation and Sewanee.
3:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Meet in Orientation Groups  New students will meet with their orientation leader and their orientation groups.
4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m PLAYFAIR PLAYFAIR is totally unlike anything else you have ever experienced. It's entertainment! It's fun! It's the perfect way to make new campus friendships! Join all new students for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet your new classmates.
6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Picnic Supper  Supper for the new students and their families with University staff.
8 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Freshman Residence Hall Meeting  New students will meet with their residence hall staff to get to know their proctors and review residential life policies.
10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Evening Activity Proctors will host an evening activity for new students in each residence hall.

7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Welcome Reception and Breakfast University Deans welcome all new students and parents with a full breakfast compliments of the university.
8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Interfaith Fair Visit Convocation Hall to explore the possibilities for faith and spiritual participation in and around Sewanee. All Saints' Chapel sponsors a morning of fellowship prior to the University Chapel Service.  Representatives of various faith communities will be present.
10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The University Chapel Service All Saints’ Chapel is the University Church and as such its ministry is ecumenical and its services are open to everyone. The services of worship in All Saints’ follow the usage of the Episcopal Church. Services are held at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 6:30 p.m. each Sunday the College is in session.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch Students and their families are invited to have lunch compliments of the university.
1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. Vice-Chancellor's Address Parents and new students are formally greeted by Dr. John McCardell, Vice-Chancellor.
2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Goodbyes and Families Depart New students and family members say their farewells.
3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Living with Integrity: Academics, Honor, and Community Standards University administrators and the Chair of the Honor Council will discuss the essential expectations for academics, honor, and personal behavior within the Sewanee community.
     
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Student Afternoon Sessions: Academic Life and Social Life

Students will meet with their orientation groups and participate in three informational sessions.

Academic Life: Members of the Honor Council will meet with orientation groups to discuss academic expectations and introduce the Honor Code.

Student-Faculty Engagement: University faculty will discuss the role of academic advising and highlight strategies for making the most of your classroom experience.

Academic Success: New students will meet with their OL to review the resources available to support academic success at Sewanee.

EQB: New students will explore what it means to participate in a diverse and inclusive campus.

Bringing in the Bystander: Students will meet in small groups to discuss how to promote pro-social behavior on campus, look out for others’ well-being, and recognize and prevent risky situations.

9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Bookstore VIP Night

Join the rest of the freshman class for food, fun, and prizes at the bookstore!

10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sewanee Ghost Stories, Legends, and Traditions

Come listen to an evening of storytelling for the Class of 2022. Students will learn all about Sewanee’s many traditions, legends, and even a few ghosts.

8 a.m. to noon Music Auditions Auditions for lessons scholarships and for all musicians planning to join a campus choir, band, or orchestra.
9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wellness in the Park

Talking about wellness isn’t enough.  Wellness is a practice.  Instead of listening to a lecture on wellness, come learn about, and engage in, a variety of wellness practices.  You will also have the opportunity to learn about the services that the Wellness Center offers students, and you can try out some useful self-care practices like yoga, massage, meditation, and biofeedback.

9 a.m. to noon Library Open House

Students visit the duPont Library to get a sneak peek at study spaces, computer labs, a high-tech music room, vintage Sewanee stuff, presentation rooms, movies, books, and more! Meet the people here to help - librarians, tech support, writing tutors, plus others! Play games, grab some candy, win prizes!

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Introduction to the Domain

The Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability will share strategies for safely and positively enjoying the opportunities for learning and recreation on the Domain.

3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Common Reading Discussion A small group discussion of the first-year common reading selection.
9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Night of Laughter with Dr. Tim Ramos

 

Join the Office of Campus Activities for a night of fun featuring Dr. Tim Ramos, comedian hypnotist! Don't miss this opportunity to join in on a night of laughter - you might be lucky enough to be part of the show! Rumor has it that there might be some free giveaways!

9:15 a.m. to 9:40 a.m.  Class of 2022 Photo A picture of the Class of 2022 will be taken in front of All Saints' Chapel. Freshmen and other new students will receive a picture as a gift from the Associated Alumni.
9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Induction and Signing of the Sewanee Honor Code Induction of new students to the University and signing of the Honor Code.
10:45 a.m. to noon Activities Fair Representatives of campus organizations and services are available to provide information and to answer questions about their group activities. Organized and sponsored by the Dean of Students Office.  New students may sign up to take part in these organizations at this time. Refreshments provided.
1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.      Financial Aid Meeting Mandatory meeting for all new students receiving any type of work or loan aid. Bring driver’s license with picture, original social security card, or passport (if available).
2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.      

Pre-Professional Program Information Sessions:

This is an opportunity for new students considering Sewanee's pre-professional curriculum to get detailed advice from faculty and students with regard to academic courses and co-curricular experiences.

4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Launching a New Year

Vice-Chancellor McCardell and community leaders welcome all students back to the Mountain for the new academic year. All new and returning students are invited to gather with faculty and staff for a picnic celebrating the Sewanee community.
