Sewanee Volunteer Fire Department

The Sewanee Volunteer Fire Department, consisting of 15-18 students and 30 community volunteers, serves the community by offering fire protection, automobile extrication, high-angle rescue and search and rescue for the Domain as well as for the surrounding towns.

Joining the Fire Department

Students can participate in the fire class second semester of their freshmen year; the class lasts six weeks culminating in a try-out followed by the selection of the new student volunteers for the following year. Being a fireman at Sewanee is a three-year commitment that involves participation by living with the department in Wiggins residence hall, full week-end training sessions four times a year, weekly drills and being on call for the majority of the week.

As a part of the certification process, participants get licensed from the Tennessee State Fire Academy which allows opportunity for employment as a firefighter in the state of Tennessee during the summer or after Sewanee.
