About the Artistic Leadership Program (ALP)

The Artistic Leadership Program (ALP) is designed to provide talented students, who are eligible to receive financial aid, with a meaningful professional experience while in Sewanee. Students from this program acquire a wide variety of twenty-first century skills that are transferable to their own majors and would prepare them for a market increasingly demanding of individuals with a multidisciplinary background. It focuses on developing skills such as teamwork, decision making, and problem solving from a leadership position and within an artistic environment.

The ALP is a highly selective program, which welcomes artistically inclined students, who are not necessarily music majors.  We invite students who love music and demonstrate an interest in business administration, art, marketing, communications, and economics.  Students are placed according to their interest and background within our organization. As a part of the program,  members of the ALP receive training by individuals from professional organizations and have the opportunity to work closely with renowned artists such as Edgar Meyer and the American Spiritual Ensemble.

Duties of an ALP member include maintaining the SSO presence in social media, developing strategies for retention and recruitment of new students, promote SSO concerts, coordinate the production of each performance and rehearsal, coordinate the VIP guest program for incoming students, maintain the SSO email list, plan special events for the orchestra, write creative curtain announcements, act as liaison between the SSO and other student organizations on campus, and facilitate an open dialogue between students and the artistic director.

ALP was the first program of its kind at the University of the South, and is quickly becoming a model for student leadership and organizational skill development.
