2018-2019 Sewanee Symphony Orchestra

A letter from Dr. César Leal, artistic director.

Warm greetings to our new students, faculty, musicians in the community, and our ever-supportive audience.

I’d like to welcome you to the 32nd season of the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra, one that you will not want to miss.

This year we focus on bringing artistic collaborations to the forefront of our artistry. Each concert experience of the 2018-2019 season will feature guest artists from the national and international music scene.

The first concert will be on Tuesday, Nov 6, 2018.  We will feature Sewanee faculty, Ms. Kaitlyn Vest, performing the Cello Concerto No.1 in C major, Hob.VIIb:1 by Haydn.  Also, our program includes the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. This concert is a welcome to our new students and a great way to show off our wonderful music faculty.

A first for The University of the South will be a side-by-side concert on Saturday, February 9, 2019, featuring the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra and the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. This concert, sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College, will highlight Sewanee students in principal roles playing alongside professional musicians from one of the leading orchestras in the region. Dr. Kayoko Dan, CSO musical director and I will share the podium.  The program for this collaboration includes Polovtsian Dances by Borodin, Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov, and Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25 by Sarasate, featuring Dr. Peter Povey on the violin.

Our last concert of the season, Thursday, April 4, 2019, I am thrilled to share the stage, once again, with world-class baritone Reginal Smith Jr. We will perform Pilgrimage by Carlisle Floyd (a rarely performed cantata for baritone and orchestra).  Additionally, I am honored to perform with Sewanee’s artist in residence and well-known opera star Kallen Esperian (soprano).  The complete program is still Sewanee’s best kept secret but I can tell you that you will not forget these artists singing together.

As always, our concerts take place at Guerry Auditorium at 7:30pm.  Thanks to the generosity of the University of the South, our concerts remain free and open to the public.

I will look for you there!
