Ron Rash Receives Distinguished Award   printer

In November 2011 SR friend and contributor Ron Rash received the North Carolina Award in Literature from Governor Beverly Purdue, one of the five highest civilian awards the state presents, meant to honor "men and women who reflect the very best in imagination, exploration, creativity, and humanitarian service."  Rash was awarded specifically for his "work [that] shows his deep respect for mountain people, language, history, and culture."  For the past 10 years, Rash has contributed primarily poetry to the magazine, though his short-story "Hard Times" appeared in our Winter 2007 issue.  Rash has received numerous honors over the years, including the O. Henry Award, the Sir Walter Raleigh Award, and his recent induction into the Fellowship of Southern Writers in 2011.
