Smoke-Free
Housing
For environmental,
health, and safety reasons, several residential halls have been
designated smoke-free. Candles, incense, and cigarettes are prohibited
within the rooms and in all common areas of these facilities.
The College has selected one women's dorm, one men's dorm, and
two co-ed dorms (Hodgson, Humphreys, Quintard, Gorgas, and St. Luke's dormitories)
to accommodate those students who choose not to smoke. If smoking
is part of your lifestyle, you may still live in these facilities
but you may not smoke in these facilities. Room selection for
smoke-free dorms will take place during the normal lottery period.
Substance-Free
Housing
The College
has set aside a number of living areas dedicated for substance-free
housing. Students living in substance-free do not have to agree
to entirely abstain from the use of alcohol ot tobacco while living
in substance-free. But they do agree not to possess or use alcohol,
tobacco, smokeless tobacco or other illegal substances within
the confines of their room or suite. Students in substance-free
housing further agree that, should they consume alcohol while
away from their residence, they will not return to their dorm
room while under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
Presently, no alcohol or tobacco use is permitted in any of the
common areas of our residential facilities. In substance-free
housing, this policy effectively extends to students rooms, regardless
of the resident's age. Presently, the second floor in Quintard Dormitory
and one floor in McCrady Dormitory have been set aside for substance-free
living.
Rule Enforcement
Living in
substance-free housing is completely voluntary. If you are not
willing to live up to this agreement, and wish merely to secure
a better dorm, you should not sign up. The enforcement of the
substance-free housing guidelines will be primarily resident enforced--
by the Proctors, Assistant Proctors, and other residents. Students
who violate the agreement for substance-free housing will be subject
to disciplinary action including fines, sanctions and they will
likely have their substance-free housing privilege revoked. In
the event that a student's substance-free housing privilege are
revoked, he or she will be required to move to the first appropriate
space, as determined by the Director of Residential Life and the
Assistant Dean of Students.
Application
Procedure
Students from
all classes are encouraged to apply for substance-free housing.
As we do with the general room selection process, seniors will
draw first to insure they receive a room if they desire one. After
seniors draw, all other substance-free applicants will select
their room based on their lottery number. The only requirement
for selection at that time will be that all persons who live in
substance-free housing, including roommates and suitemates, agree
to the terms of substance-free living. That means you may select
a double room and have your friend live with you, but he or she
must agree to the same guidelines. If you are interested in living
in a substance-free environment, please be aware that application
or substance-free housing will be available April 5. Substance-Free
room draw will take place April 14-15. General Room draw for other
dormitories will take place April 19-22. First-year students may
designate their interest in substance-free on their Housing Preference
Form.
