Management Team
Most programs on St. Catherine’s Island have an off-site director, usually an academic, who works with the professional staff on the island to meet program goals. The St. Catherine’s Island Primate Research Program is managed in this way. The Superintendent of the Island, Royce Hayes, represents the owning foundation and supervises island staff. The Director, Timothy Keith-Lucas, is the academic head and represents research and educational interests. The Wildlife Curator, Eugene “Von” Kment, has responsibility for care of the animals and supervises keepers. These three people make most management decisions as a team. In addition, Terry Norton, DVM, has responsibility for animal health and advises the team on nutrition and health issues. Additional staff feed and care for the animals daily. Royce Hayes lives on the island and Von Kment is a full time employee. Tim Keith-Lucas is Professor of Psychology at The University of the South (Sewanee), visits the island about every six weeks and is in residence half of each summer.
