Research activities include development and deployment of infrared instruments for ground based, aircraft and satellite observations.

Current work involves the use of ground-based and aircraft mounted interferometers to measure, by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy, the abundances of important stratospheric and tropospheric gases and the design and development of infrared tunable diode laser systems for measurement of in-situ concentrations of tropospheric gases for aircraft and surface applications.

I am closely involved with all aspects of the work, from instrumentation to analysis of the resultant data.

For the Fourier transform spectroscopy work I have participated in and led field programs resulting in more than 600 hours of aircraft flights to measure the latitudinal and seasonal distributions and long term trends in stratospheric constituents.  More than 60,000 infrared stratospheric spectra now have been archived.

For the tunable diode laser spectroscopy I have been integral to the design and development of three systems which have been successfully deployed on aircraft platforms.  One very fast response, relatively short path length system was used to measure in situ tropospheric CO and a slower, longer path length instrument was used for measuring SO2.  The most recent development is a fully automatic instrument to measure CO and N2O at the 1 ppbv concentration level in 1 second from a high altitude aircraft platform.

As Deputy Principal Investigator of the HIRDLS experiment for the NASA EOS-Aura satellite, launched in July 2004, I am especially involved with instrument design, testing and calibration and program management.
