The Club

Because we believe that philosophy is not just an academic specialty but a mode of inquiry important to any worthwhile life, the faculty of the Philosophy Department along with interested students have created a forum for discussing philosophy in informal settings outside the classroom.

Active since 1998, the Club has sponsored numerous kinds of events, the most popular of which include the viewing and discussion of philosophical themes in contemporary films. The club has shown a diverse array of movies, including "Fight Club," "Sling Blade," "Pi," "High Noon ," and "American History X." These viewings not only acquaint the community with films that deal with controversial issues, but also provide a forum for viewers to discuss their responses among people of varying perspectives.

The philosophy club has also put together numerous formal lectures. Recent lecture/community discussions sponsored by the club have dealt with issues such as ethical relativism, ethics and human sexuality, and the concept of vocation within various traditions. Both students and faculty participate in facilitating these discussions for the larger community.
