What are the Parents’ Association and the Parents’ Council?
Welcome to the Sewanee Parents’ Association! All parents of students enrolled in the college are considered members of the Sewanee Parents’ Association. The central aim of the association is to enhance the awareness of parents about the University community. The activities of the Association are directed by the Parents’ Council, which is composed of approximately thirty single parents or couples appointed by the Vice Chancellor for terms of two to three years. The council meets twice during the academic year: on Family Weekend in the fall and again on the weekend of the “Sewanee Experience” for prospective students in April. The council’s purposes are:
1) To guide the members of the parent community toward increased understanding and support for the University;
2) to develop the parent community as a resource for the college; and
3) to provide a forum for parents to offer their opinions and suggestions to the college.
To accomplish the purposes, the council has established five committees. Members of the council hear from University staff members in one of three committee meetings: Admission and Recruitment, Career Services, or Annual Giving. The entire body functions as “committees of the whole” on the two topics that are of concern and interest to all parents: Academic Life and Student Affairs.
The Parents’ Council welcomes interest in its projects and programs, as well as offers of particular advice or assistance. This group has requested that we note in this handbook that they would be happy to receive phone calls from parents who want to ask questions of other Sewanee parents.
