What happens during Orientation for new students?
New students arrive for the Orientation Program five days before classes begin. Orientation includes a full schedule of informative sessions on all aspects of Sewanee life and gives ample opportunity for new students to become acquainted with one another, with upperclassmen, and with faculty. Some special features include meetings and dinner with faculty advisors, information sessions on student life, registration for class, and a formal induction into the University and the signing of the Honor Code. There are also lectures or presentations by faculty scholars and students on relevant topics, including the book assigned to all new students during the summer preceding their matriculation. Picnics, recreational opportunities, band concerts, a supper with the Vice Chancellor, and dormitory activities are planned as well. Orientation is the responsibility of a student committee under the guidance of the Dean of Students.
