The University Health Service (UHS) provides a responsive, efficient, and comprehensive program of health care for the students of the University of the South. The health service operates as a primary care system with a nurse practitioner as the first line of health care. A physician is available on a limited basis to see students who have been referred by the nurse practitioner. The staff also enhances the University’s educational environment and processes, assists in modifying health-related barriers to learning, and promotes an optimal level of wellness.
The nurse practitioner and registered nurses are available 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 12:30–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on Thursday when the clinic hours are 12:30–4:30 p.m. (Summer and holiday hours may vary.) The health service is located on University Avenue next to Emerald-Hodgson Hospital and across the street from the Sewanee Inn. It is requested that appointments be made. Walk-ins are seen as soon as possible after those students with appointments are seen. When UHS is closed and an emergency arises or medical attention is necessary on the weekend, the emergency room of Emerald-Hodgson Hospital may be used. Costs for treatment in the emergency room are not paid by the health service or the University. The patient is billed by the hospital and these bills can be submitted to insurance carriers by the patient. Students should be encouraged not to use the emergency room for routine illnesses as these are rarely covered under insurance policies. All students are required to carry a comprehensive health insurance plan in order to cover any unexpected accident or hospital stay.
“It is essential that you contact the customer service department of your insurance company to see if they require notification that you will be out of your provider area. Please make sure your student is insured while in Sewanee.”
There is no charge for the services of the medical personnel or office visits. Students are charged for laboratory testing, allergy injections, and some screening procedures. Prescription medications are not provided by UHS. Only full-time undergraduates and School of Theology students are eligible to use the health service.
