Second Letter to Parents

Dear Families of the Class of 2018,

It won’t be long until you find yourself headed to Sewanee for Commencement. This email includes important information that you will want to review and save.  This information is included on the Commencement website at http://www.sewanee.edu/parents/commencement/ . This will be a good resource for you as you plan your Commencement week at Sewanee.

I think the most urgent thing right now is that if you want to purchase the official University announcements (and have not already); you need to order by April 14.  You can do that at http://www.sewanee.edu/parents/commencement/announcements/.

Also, if you need additional housing or are still looking for housing, our office has been notified of some cancellations on a few great campus homes and one in the Monteagle Assembly.  Just let me know if you want us to send you that information.

Here is a lot of information – sorry about that, but I just want to cover the bases.  As always, let me know if you have any questions.

Schedule and Ticket Pickup at McGriff Alumni House:

Schedules and tickets may be picked up during the day on Thursday through Sunday morning at the University Commencement Desk at the McGriff Alumni House located on Georgia Avenue.

Tickets are not needed for the Baccalaureate Service

Other tickets you may want are:
Tickets to the Baccalaureate Lunch on Saturday (Catered meal in the McClurg Dining Hall)
Additional tickets to the Commencement Lunch on Sunday (after the complimentary 3 provided)

The commencement desk will be open during the day on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., on Saturday May 12 from 8 a.m. until 12:00, and on Sunday, May 13 from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.

Baccalaureate Service and Lunch – Saturday, May 12

The Baccalaureate service will take place in All Saints’ Chapel on Saturday, May 12.

Baccalaureate Service Tickets are not required for this 10 a.m. service on Saturday, May 12.  The doors will open at 9 a.m. for the first-come, first served seating for this service. Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009 and a professor at Stanford University, will receive an honorary degree and will give the Baccalaureate address during the service.  Additional seating for family members and guests will be provided in the quadrangle.  In addition, Guerry Auditorium will be available for overflow seating and provides plenty of comfortable theater style seating with excellent viewing on oversized screen.  Tickets are not required for this venue.

Baccalaureate Lunch We hope you will plan to attend the Baccalaureate brunch following the service on Saturday, May 12.  As there may be other social functions taking place on Saturday, please check with your graduate before you order brunch tickets.  If you choose to order tickets for your family, you will need to purchase a ticket for your graduate.  If you haven’t already or if you need more, you may order tickets online for adults at $15 each and for children at $7.50 each at http://www.sewaneegateway.com/commtix.  It’s really a nice option – convenient and yummy.

Commencement Service – Sunday, May 13

The graduates will need to arrive to All Saints’ Chapel by 9:15 a.m. and enter through the War Memorial Chapel door (McClurg side) to receive seating assignments. Only graduates will be allowed in All Saints’ Chapel.  All other guests will be seating in the quadrangle or in overflow seating in Guerry Auditorium.

Each graduate of the University receives two (2) guest tickets for priority seating in the quadrangle outside of All Saints’ Chapel.  Tickets will not be required for the general admission seating in the quadrangle (only the priority seating) and there is no limit to the number of guests a graduate can have.

During the Commencement Service, guests will watch and hear a portion of the service on jumbo monitors from their seats in the quadrangle and be able to watch the conferring of degrees portion take place outside All Saints’ Chapel in the quadrangle.

Additional seating for family members and guests will be provided at Guerry Auditorium.  This venue provides plenty of comfortable theater style seating with excellent viewing on oversized screen.  Tickets are not required for these venues.

Tickets for the Commencement Lunch: The graduates, their families and guests are invited to the luncheon on the Gailor Lawn (behind All Saints’ and McClurg) following Commencement.  Each graduate will be provided three (3) complimentary tickets.  If there will be more than 3 in your party (including your graduate) and you plan to attend the luncheon, you will need to purchase additional tickets.  You may purchase them online at http://www.sewaneegateway.com/commtix.
Special Needs: For those with special needs such as a wheelchair, walker or acute medical conditions, special seating can be arranged for both the baccalaureate and commencement services.  Please email Heather Brewer (hebrewer@sewanee.edu) in the alumni office or call her at 931-598-1633.

Photography during Commencement:  A professional photographer has been contracted to take pictures of each senior as Vice-Chancellor McCardell presents the diploma.  After Commencement, you will receive information by email about the pictures and how to view and order them.

Commencement Schedule: A preliminary schedule for commencement weekend can be found online at http://www.sewanee.edu/parents/commencement/commencement-events/ . If you have any questions regarding the activities for the week, please call us toll free at 888-867-6884.

All of us on the Mountain look forward to celebrating the accomplishments of the Class of 2018 with you and your family.  If your schedule allows, I hope you can be here in time for the Commencement Kick-Off party at 5 p.m. at the McGriff Alumni House. It’s super fun and a great way to see other families and faculty members.
See you in May!
