Clothing, food and security

What kind of clothing do students need?
In accordance with Sewanee tradition, men wear coats and ties and women wear skirts or dresses to classes and Performing Arts Series events.

Students wear comfortable shoes, since many of the paths are gravel. Rain gear is essential for all students. Special items which might be included in a student’s wardrobe are hiking shoes, riding apparel, and swim suits. It is good to remember that cold weather starts soon after Thanksgiving.

What is the food service like for students?
Food service is provided in the new, 800-seat McClurg Hall and the Tiger Bay Pub. The program includes continuous dining and is provided by ARAMARK. Using state-of-the-art equipment, the program at McClurg offers traditional home cooked meals; made to order pasta, wraps and Mongolian grill dishes prepared in full view of the guests; a full service bakery specializing in home made desserts; a salad bar, deli bar, pizza buffet, and grille. Student identification cards are required for admittance to McClurg.

In the Tiger Bay Pub students have a relaxed atmosphere where they can enjoy the company of friends and a variety of made-to-order items. From 5 p.m. till 2 a.m. there is a selection of hot and cold sandwiches and grilled items which students may purchase with cash or flex dollars.

All undergraduate students who live in college residence halls or in facilities associated with the residential life program of the college are required to purchase the University board plan.

Students who require special diets should present to the University Health Service a written report from their family physician including the prescribed diet. Special diets are available at McClurg Hall.

Students living outside college dormitories or facilities associated with the residential life program of the college may choose whether or not to purchase the board plan.

What security precautions should students take?
The campus at Sewanee is, on the whole, a safe place to live. Although no institution can guarantee the safety of all students at all times, the University is fortunate to be located in a relatively low crime area and to have a very capable campus police force, which traditionally has been attuned to the special needs of students, faculty, and staff. Students have enjoyed an atmosphere in which members of the community may go safely about their various activities.

Sewanee, however, like other colleges and universities, is not immune to the problems, including crime which are present in the larger American society. Therefore, the best defense against crime for the University community and its individual members is planned prevention. Students are urged to contribute to their individual and collective safety by using preventive measures such as immediately reporting violations of their rights or the rights of others to the Sewanee Police and taking advantage of the security services provided. These include the following:

1. The student night escort service or the Sewanee Police Department provides transportation from the library to outlying residence halls on school nights. Contact should be made by calling the Sewanee Police Department;
2. Registration of bicycles to expedite recovery if they are lost or stolen;

Students should remember to keep their room doors locked when they leave the room or when they are asleep. It is recommended that students keep their automobile doors and bicycles locked at all times. The University does not provide insurance for students’ belongings, nor does it accept responsibility for items that are stolen or accidentally destroyed. Students whose family insurance policies do not cover their belongings while at the University often can have an extension rider added at little additional cost.
