Outreach Network Organizations

The Outreach Network, which incorporates the CSC (Community Service Council), the Outreach Office, and all student and community run organizations in Sewanee, helps interested students find their area of service participation and leadership on campus.  These many service groups operate independently, but are bound together by their common drive to serve the community.  The independent service groups that comprise the ON include the following...

Big People for Little People
A student-run organization that pairs Sewanee students with a child from the local elementary school. Holiday oriented parties are planned and organized by BPLP leaders and are highly anticipated by the little people.  Each University student is free to become as involved as they like with their little person and it is for this reason that the organization is extremely popular among the student body.

Cause for Paws
Franklin County Humane Society takes in over 4000 animals each year. Since it is entirely funded by private donations and adoption fees, there is never enough time or money to do everything for the wonderful animals. Volunteers are vital! You can choose to work in the shelter, holding, cuddling or walking the animals. Their gratitude is always evident in the way they look at you.

Community Action Committee (CAC)
The CAC offers groceries and bread, assistance with utility bills, financial counseling and links to other assistance agencies in the area to more than 30 needy families in the greater Sewanee community. This committee is an outreach ministry of Otey Parish and other area churches that need student volunteers to help with the distribution of their services.

Farmer's Market
Based in the South Cumberland region, this community-run farmer's market provides local, fresh food to all families. Sewanee students are working to incorporate the food into their meal plan, sell food from the University's organic garden on Old Farm Rd., and spread awareness to the community about this opportunity to support the local economy.

Blue Monarch
Blue Monarch is a non-profit organization that has a one-year residencial program for women recovering from abuse, alcohol and drug addictions, and poverty. The women and their children are housed while they recieve an education, find a job, become better mothers, and gain confidence in themselves. Students with the University raise awareness and money, visit the women and their children, and generally try to include the women in the Sewanee community.

Gay Straight Alliance

African American Alliance (AAA)
The African American Alliance is a student initiated organization that aspires to heighten African American awareness on Sewanee’s campus. In working in conjunction with the office of Multicultural Affairs, the African American Alliance has been successful in creating a warm atmosphere full of diverse opportunities for its members.

Girl Scouts
Dedicated to girls and only girls, the Girl Scouts builds character and the skills needed for success. It was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low in Savanna, Georgia, it now has 3.6 million members in the United States and 90 other countries. University students can volunteer with the Sewanee branch, who works closely with girls in the local area.

    Housing Sewanee
Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian housing organization.  All people are welcomed to join this outreach organization as its members build simple, affordable houses in partnership with those who are in dire need of this shelter.  Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses in more than 79 countries, including some 30,000 houses across the United States. Here at Sewanee, students usually work on Friday afternoons from 1-4 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am-3 pm.  This organization is highly productive and always looks forward to new helpers!

Across the globe, Heifer International donors, volunteers, staff and project partners strive daily to build communities, distribute resources fairly, improve access to education and preserve our environment.  Each year Sewanee raises money to buy an Ark of animals: 2 camels, 2 flocks of chicks, 2 cows, 2 oxens, 2 donkeys, 2 Trios of ducks, 2 Flocks of geese, 2 Trios of guinea pigs, 2 llamas, 2 pigs, 2 beehives, 2 Trios of rabbits, 2 sheep, and 2 water buffalos. Together, you'll learn how these animals help families through wool, honey and milk and in dozens of other ways.  In the 2006 Heifer campaign the Sewanee Community raised $9,174.81 which was enough to buy one Ark, two "Joy to the World" collections (4 sheep, 8 goats, 2 heifers, and 4 llamas), one "Milk Menagerie" (1 heifer, 2 goats, and a water buffalo), 2 tree seedlings, honeybees, and a flock of ducks/geese for people around the world.

Komen Chattanooga Race for the Cure®
In 2003, the Komen Foundation celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure®, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. More than 1 million people participated in more than 100 races in 2005. The Komen Race for the Cure® Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

Volunteers are welcomed to run this 5k race itself in Chattanooga and are needed to assist with the pre-race spaghetti dinner, which takes place the night before the race in the Women’s Center.

Middle School Mentoring
Once a week middle school students from Winchester come visit Sewanee for help with school work and a chance to play games with college students.  Usually lasting from 3-5, this organization allows middle schoolers who come from tough backgrounds to form relationships with enthusiastic Sewanee students.

School Tutors
The Grundy County Elementary School and the Townsend Center in Winchester graciously entertains Sewanee student volunteers several days of the week at all hours of the day. The tutoring sessions generally last an hour and range from sessions with middle schools to adults. Due to the distant location of the school, a carpool is usually organized.

Senior Citizen’s Outreach

This group of students volunteers weekly at the Monteagle Care and Rehabilitation Center in Monteagle, TN.  The leaders of this group bring a pre-organized activity, such as pin the tail on the donkey or Easter cookie decorating, to the center and volunteers help the residents enjoy it. Two dances are also held at the facility, one around Valentine’s Day and the other, a Senior Citizen’s Prom, during the springtime.

Sewanee AIDS Awareness Association

An organization created by students to further educate the student body about this worldwide epidemic. The Association attempts, through innovative student leadership, to promote programs such as
World AIDS Day, the AIDS walk and various lectures, all of which aid in the broadening of our community’s knowledge.

Focus the Nation
An organization that aims to bring awareness about global warming to the school campus and politicians. By showing films, putting up fact-filled signs, and inviting speakers, they hope to remind people of their impact on the environment. On January 31, 2008, Sewanee will hopefully host political speakers and have a day of awareness in preparation of the upcoming election.

Waste Not
Waste Not is Sewanee’s student-run environmental group.  While most of Waste Not’s energy is dedicated to recycling and Earth Week/Day, the organization also places high emphasis on this community’s environmental awareness by aiding in further environmental education and outreach trips.
