USGS Visits Campus to Monitor Eastern Spotted Newts


Newt CatchThe USGS visited Sewanee’s campus this past Tuesday as part of their ARMI, Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative. Thirty Eastern Spotted Newts were caught, swabbed for Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, or Bsal, and then released. Bsal is a highly contageous fungus that, while not yet in the US, is likely to enter the country in the coming years.

Sewanee Hosts Third Annual Wildland Fire Class

 and Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability hosted Sewanee's third annual basic wildland fire training course Jan. 9th-13th. Taught by the Cherokee National Forest Hotshots, students returned from Christmas break a week early to learn about wildland fire behavior, the incident command system, human factors in wildland fire, and the basics tactics of wildland firefighting.
