Civic Engagement Service Awards

The Office of Civic Engagement works to recognize outstanding students who engage communities to make meaningful change. The following awards cover the broad scope of service performed by student interns, first responders, volunteers and organizers, both on campus and internationally.

The Community Builder Award

The Community Builder Award is given to a current sophomore, junior or senior who has expressed a spirit of service over self through outstanding work in addressing some issue impacting the Sewanee campus community. Any leadership activity that has helped to solve a problem, and improve the quality of campus life constitutes community building in this case. The Community Builder Award recipient has made a significant impact during the year of the award with a single project and demonstrated leadership.

Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated impactful service in a single area; on campus service is required.
  2. Demonstrated significant leadership role(s).
  3. Demonstrated strength of character and commitment to service over self.

 

The Doug Cameron Award for Outstanding Emergency Service to the Community

The Doug Cameron Award is given to a graduating senior whose volunteer firefighter service has been exemplary. Often, volunteer firefighters are asked to act in situations of extreme personal risk without hesitation or regard for personal welfare. For this, the Doug Cameron Award winner has the utmost respect and admiration of this community.

Criteria:

  1. Outstanding, effective service in the Sewanee Fire Department.
  2. Demonstrated strength of character and commitment to service over self.

 

International Service Award

The International Service Award is given to a senior who has expressed a spirit of service over self through outstanding work internationally. Any activity that has created effective change, improved the quality of life, or elevated the responsibility of global citizenship, in a particular region or overall, constitutes service. The student has made a significant impact with a single or multiple projects.

Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated commitment to international service and global citizenship.
  2. Demonstrated impact made in a particular region, on a particular project, or through a breadth of service experiences.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to service over self.

 

Sewanee Service Internship Award

The Service Internship Award is given to a Bonner Leader, Canale Service Intern, Civic Engagement Work Study, or Summer VISTA who has created significant impact on the Mountain in partnership with a community organization, and shown outstanding growth in their approach to service. The student's project(s) have been visionary, shown great initiative, and have “widened the circle” of those involved with civic engagement through collaborative efforts.

Criteria:

  1. Shown great initiative in either creating a new program or developing an existing program.
  2. Used remarkable leadership to build collaborations across student groups, through off-campus partnerships, or both.
  3. Expressed outstanding growth as a Service Intern.

 

Volunteer of the Year Award

The Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a current sophomore, junior or senior who has, during the current academic year, made a significant impact on student life, the campus community, or the work of community partners through his or her volunteer activities. The student has exemplified extraordinary leadership in bringing quality programming, sustaining student involvement, and creating continuity with community partners. The volunteer's efforts go beyond any paid service internship or academic responsibilities.

Criteria:

  1. Demonstrated impact through voluntary service.
  2. Demonstrated strong leadership.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to service over self.
