The Office of the Dean of the College and the CFT welcome Dr. Barbara Lom, Professor and Chair of Biology at Davidson College and long-time facilitator (and former director) with the ACS Summer Teaching & Learning Workshop. You will have several chances to interact with Barbara.
You can read more about Barbara in our February 2018 newsletter. Below is a brief summary of Barbara's sessions:
12:00pm-1:30pm: a hands-on workshop for any discipline titled "Practical Strategies for Enhancing Inclusivity in Undergraduate Courses." Discussion of a variety of specific, practical, and evidence-based strategies that can create more inclusive and effective learning environments for all of our students as well as time for reflection on what strategies we might implement in our own courses.
10:00am-11:00am and 1:30pm-2:30pm: drop-in hours for one-on-one or small group conversations with Barbara
3:30pm-4:30pm: a discussion session titled "Toward More Inclusive Courses: Starting with the Gateways." This session will provide an overview of work in progress at Davidson College as part of their quality enhancement plan (QEP), Opening Wide the Gateways. Barbara will share examples of how Davidson is identifying their specific challenges, learning from their students, using literature on inclusive pedagogies, creating faculty cohorts, supporting experimentation, and deploying inclusive pedagogies within gateway STEM courses. While this session is geared more toward STEM faculty due to the nature of Davidson’s QEP, all are invited to attend.
