![]() Sewanee, Tennessee The Music Department at the University of the South has a twofold mission: (1) we seek to provide professionally oriented instruction for a relatively small number of music majors and minors, and (2) we seek to provide music ensemble opportunities and humanistically oriented music history and literature courses for the student body at large. The Music Department was instrumental in remodeling St. Luke's Chapel for use as a recital space. It houses a Bosendorfer Piano and a pipe organ. In addition, a Cassavant Ferres organ with over 3,000 speaking pipes is located in All Saints' Chapel. Shappard Tower is the location for the Leonidas Polk Memorial Carillon; it contains 56 bells weighing over 23 tons. Instrumental instruction in available in a wide variety of orchestral instruments The Orchestra, directed by Dr. Steven Shrader, comprises students, faculty, and staff from the University, totaling 45 members. It rehearses once a week and performs one or two concerts each semester. The University Choir, directed by Dr. Robert Delcamp, is comprised of 65 students from the College of Arts and Science. The Choir rehearses three times a week, sings for Sunday services and evensongs, and offers a formal concert each semester. The Music Department Master Calendar Musical opportunities include:
