To establish a system of peer guidance and support in academic and social arenas to help reduce the confusion and anxiety in the lives of freshman that may exist in the first weeks of College and throughout the freshman year. The time of greatest concern is during the pivotal first weeks of college before new students find the various support mechanisms available to them such as faculty advisors, the Faculty-Mentor Program, the Office of Minority Student Affairs, and other Student Life Offices. This program aims to provide guidance to the students during this important time.

· Offer insight about the type of social life that complements
a successful academic experience;
· Share information about the types and sources of help on

Each freshman participant is assigned an upper-class mentor of for a one-on-one relationship, which should last throughout the freshman year.
Peer-mentors have access to limited funds for a “bonding” meal with their peer-mentee.
Things to do:
· Respect confidentiality of your mentee;
· Direct mentees to sources of assistance when needed;
· Provide a good academic example to your mentee; and
· Share a positive attitude and outlook about college and life.
Things not to do:
· Introduce your mentee to bad personal or academic habits; or
· Introduce your mentee to personal biases towards others.
