The purpose of the University Health Service (UHS) is to support the mission of The University of the South by providing professional, high-quality, and caring health services and health education programs for the students of the university. Through its programs, services, and developmental approach to health care, the UHS seeks to enhance the university’s educational programs and environment; assist in modifying health related concerns; and promote an optimal level of wellness on campus. While the first responsibility of the health service is to the students of the university, the office also provides limited but valuable health related support to the university community. The UHS is also an integral partner in the student affairs division of the College of Arts and Sciences, playing a supportive and educational role in the division’s efforts to enhance the undergraduate experience at Sewanee and ensure the health, safety, and welfare of students.
- We enter into the mission of the University as a whole by gauging the effects of our services on retention and academic success, not exclusively on treatment of illness or disease.
- We provide services based on information obtained through various agencies, such as the American College Health Association, which address the specific needs and risk factors of the limited population we serve.
- We provide services and programs that focus on education, prevention and wellness as well as acute illness and disease.
- We are cognizant of and work around the schedules of our students so that we are more accessible than community services.
- We engage in collaboration with other departments in the student affairs division as well as working with the administration and faculty to support all aspects of campus life.
- We foster a proactive role on the part of our students in regard to their health care. We understand the unique nature of college students and work with them to develop a plan of action best suited to their specific needs and health concerns.
- We teach students how to access the health care system appropriately, particularly as it relates to emergency room visits and specialist referrals. We assist them in becoming wise consumers in the health care system and educate them on how to access services that will enhance their health.
