Zachau studied at the University of Hamburg and the University of Pittsburgh, has taught at the University of Kiel and the University of Pittsburgh, and is currently professor of German and chair of the film studies program. He is a member of the Consortium for German, which has offered annual German immersion programs in Sewanee since 1994.
Zachau’s books include Stefan Heym, Hans Fallada als politischer Schriftsteller, Hans Fallada 1893-1947: Bibliografie zur Sekundärliteratur, Hans Fallada: Eine kritische Untersuchung zur Rezeption seines Werks in den Jahren 1930-199, and Heinrich Böll: Forty Years of Criticism. Zachau’s coauthored books include Stefan Heym: Socialist - Dissenter - Jew (with Peter Hutchinson), German Culture through Film (with Robert Reimer and Margit Sinka), and Arbeitsbuch for German Culture through Film (with Robert Reimer). Zachau also edited Jakob Littner ‘s Journey Through the Night (with Kurt Grübler), and Jakob Littner’s Mein Weg durch die Nacht (with Roland Ulrich).
Currently he is working with Margit Sinka and Rolf Goebel on a two-part book on Berlin’s cultural history, which explores Berlin’s districts through its architecture, literature and films.
