Call for Papers

In association with Fallada Forum, the German Department at Emory University and the Max Kade Center of European and German Studies at Vanderbilt University, the German Department at the University of the South invite submissions for a multi-disciplinary conference entitled Berlin and Modernism 1900-1945.

Sewanee, Tennessee
Date: Sept. 26-28


The conference will bring together academics from various disciplines to explore the many artistic forms that turned Berlin into a vibrant center of modernism after 1900. Papers will focus on the connection between architecture, city planning and literature, theater, film, music and art. We invite submissions from all disciplines engaged in Berlin Studies. Graduate students are encouraged to participate.


Topics should be submitted from among the following:

  • Berlin in Movies
  • Jewish Berlin; Berlin’s Jews
  • Berlin in Literature, Berlin Authors
  • Films based on literary works
  • Architecture and City Planning
  • Berlin in the performing arts
  • Berlin in fine art
  • Fallada in film and literature

Abstracts must be submitted not later than March 20, 2008 to Berlin and Modernism Conference, Department of German
