Assignments
The following assignments will serve as a schedule for our
daily work. We shall make every effort to complete each "Part" by the
designated time and shall not vary from the examination dates. The
daily assignments may change to fit the needs of the participants. Please do
not bring written translations to class. Short vocabulary lists are
encouraged.
PART ONE (January15-February 12)
The first six books of Robert Fitzgerald's translation of the Aeneid
should be read by January 31. Class translations of the Latin text
will cover Book I of the Aeneid; approximate daily assignments are
listed below; however, note that these selections may occasionally change. When in doubt,
ask for the next assignment at the end of the class meeting!
- January 15-- Introduction: Vergil, Augustan Age, Epic poetry; versification; Bk. I. 1-11.
- January 17--Bk. I. 12-33.
- January 22--Bk. I. 33-59; 124-129.
- January 24--Bk. I. 129-156.
- January 29-Bk. I. 170-207.
- January 31--Bk. I. 335-360. (Finish reading Bks. I-VI).
- February 5--Bk. I. 361-368; 453-468; 494-506; 579-587.
- February 7--Bk. I. 594-624.
- February 12----Examination.

PART TWO (February 14-March 4)
Selections for this section will be taken mainly from Book II. Students
should also carefully reread Book III in translation; on the last day
of regular assignments (February 28), there will be a class discussion
of Book III. Approximate daily assignments are listed below. Begin
reading the second half of the Aeneid (Bks. VII-XII).

- February 28--Bk. II. 551-558.
- March 4--Examination.

PART THREE (March 18-April 8)
During this period, reading selections will be taken from Book IV.
Students may (optional) also submit a topic (by April 1--no jokes please) for an
essay on some appropriate subject (discuss topics with your teacher). Approximate reading assignments follow.

- March 20--Bk. IV. 40-73
- March 25-- Bk. IV. 73-89; 160-172; 259-271.
- March 27--Bk. IV. 272-308.
- April 1--Bk. IV. 309-319; 349-361; 393-415.
- April 3--Bk. IV. 432-473.
- April 8--Examination.
PART FOUR (April 10-April 29)
Reading selections for this period will taken from Books VI and
XII. Finish reading Books VII-XII in Fitzgerald's translation for discussions on April 17 and 22.
- April 10--Read Bk. VI in translation up through line 449. Translate lines 450-476.
- April 15--Bk. VI. 679-709; Reread in translation all of Bk. VI.
- April 17--Read in translation and discuss Books VII-IX.
- April 22--Read in translation and discuss Books X-XII, line 890.
- April 24--Bk. XII. 891-921.
- April 29--Bk. XII. 921-952. Optional essay due.
Final Examination--May 6, 9:00 AM
Course Expectations
- Complete all daily assignments. Daily grades will be given for translations done in class.
- Be prepared to discuss material which will occasionally be assigned in addition to the Latin text.
- Be responsible for getting the correct assignment for the next class meeting. Whenever there is any doubt about the next assignment, ask your teacher.
- Read in translation all the portions of the Aeneid not assigned to be read in Latin. (These assignments from Fitzgerald's translation are included in the class schedule.)
- Attend class regularly. Class participation is an important part of grade evaluation. Failure to attend class will result in grade penalties.
- Please note that this class satisfies the General Education Requirement in Foreign Language.

Grade Evaluation
There will be three examinations, one optional essay, and a final exam.
The examinations and daily performance
will account for approximately 70%, the essay 10%, and the final
examination 20% of the final grade. If you choose not to write an essay, the hourly exams and
daily performance will count 75% and the final exam 25%.

*It is a good idea to call before coming by. I shall try to be present during office hours, but committee
meetings and emergencies sometimes occur during these times.
