Carmen 64

Lines 1-18: Gods and Men (optimistic).
Water imagery as a positive symbol of harmony;
first ship amidst the wholeness and harmony of
nature; personification, metaphor, and metonymy.

	Lines 19-46: The Wedding Gathering After the Romantic Meeting.
	Thetis and Peleus are united with Jupiter's approval and the approval of
	the divine sphere (except Apollo and Artemis); The Thessalian crowd; the abandoned
	fields (negative intrusion of optimistic scene? same for "non" anaphora?)

		Lines 47-51: Drapery of the Couch. Heroes depicted; light imagery; final
		section in which the unreal world setting dominates.

			Lines 52-123: Ariadne's First Shock and the Description of her location. Ariadne's anger
			at Theseus' departure. Ariadne's loneliness and furor; association with Maenads. Theseus'
			Mission to Crete, Ariadne's help which involves betraying her family; Theseus' betrayal of her. Water imagery seems to be used to symbolize qualities of the person or situation
			dominating each section.

				Lines 124-248: Ariadne's Curse in terms of Theseus' Forgetfulness of (a) Her and
				(b) Aegeus. Note the details of her climactic lament: climbs the mountain to express
				her curse; rehearses her betrayal; pronounces the curse (ls. 200-201) where she
				anxia demands that funestet seque suos, and Theseus' pater who is wasting away
				anxia lumina with tears kills himself so that Theseus returns to domus tecta funesta paterna morte.

			Lines 249-250: Back to Scene of First Shock. Ariadne sees Theseus departing.

		Lines 251-266: Back to the Drapery of the Couch. Bacchus appears with his Thyiad band;
		implied marriage theme? Furor and madness emphasized.

	Lines 267-383: Wedding and Wedding Song. Thessalian crowd gives way to the gods
	Gods bring gifts; the lavish feast; Fates sing the marriage song celebrating the greatness
	of the couple in terms of the greatness of their offspring. Description of Achilles optimistic?
	Destructive?

Lines 384-408: Gods and Men (pessimistic). Man's degenerate state has caused the gods to reject him.
