2.  What was Robert E. Lee attempting to accomplish with his "Farewell to the Army of Northern Virginia"?   What were Lee's goals in writing his 20 April 1865 letter to Jefferson Davis? 

3.  What is curious about Lee's two explanations for the Confederacy's demise? 

4.  One historian evaluating the Civil War has asked, "If North Vietnam could win, why not the South?  Why did Appomattox effectively signal the end of the conflict?  Why did Southerners lose the will to fight after only four years whereas the Vietnamese struggled for two generations?"  How do you respond?
