PEN Tutoring Program

With funding from the PEN Foundation for Educational Excellence, we have been offering tutoring programs in Franklin County schools since the fall, 2000.  The PEN Foundation is a local education foundation which is made up of members from a cross-section of the community.  This foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of family, economic, and community life in Franklin County through education.  The tutoring program is one of their many successful endeavors.  The tutors work one-on-one with students in the Franklin County School System in math, reading, spelling, and language arts skills.

Starting with a small group of science tutors in one elementary school (Decherd), the program has grown to about twenty tutors in seven schools who tutor a variety of subjects at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  Many of our students return the following semesters for additional terms of service in the tutoring program.  Nancy Daniel, the Coordinator of the Education Program administers the program.

Teachers and principals alike feel that the tutors are an enormous help to their students, and always request that they return the following year.  The tutors see the difference they are making in the lives of the students in the Franklin County Schools, and feel they are making an important contribution to the community.  It is an opportunity to touch the life of a child and leave a lasting impression.
