The Episcopal Church, 28 owning dioceses, and the University of the South

The University of the South, an institution of the Episcopal Church,
was founded by church leaders from the southeastern United States in
1857. The University maintains an ongoing partnership with the 28 Episcopal dioceses that
now encompass the region from which the University grew.

The University's governing bodies, the Board of Trustees and Board
of Regents, are comprised of University alumni and clergy and laity
elected from each of the 28 dioceses at their annual conventions.
The Chancellor of the University, elected by the Board of Trustees,
is a bishop from one of the 28 dioceses.

To continually affirm this historic tie, a partnership of
leadership, resource, and mutual support exists between the dioceses
and the University, enriching the Church and its role in American
higher education.

Each year the University provides the 28 owning dioceses with a
report reflecting highlights of the past year and each diocese's
participation. This includes student enrollment by state, and
reports on the diocese's participation in institutional leadership,
oversight, programs, and financial partnership.
