The Domain

The University of the South is situated on the Cumberland Plateau in Middle Tennessee.

A distinctive feature of the University is its physical setting. Extensive woodlands, lakes, trails, and bluffs surround the campus and the residential village of Sewanee. The tract of over 10,000 acres owned by the University for many years is known as the University Domain. Aside from the campus and town, it has been preserved in a natural state as a wildlife preserve, recreational area, working forest, and site for academic study. The Domain, in effect, serves as a vast laboratory. Moreover, in cooperation with the Land Trust for Tennessee, Sewanee in 2008 added an adjacent nearly 3,000-acre forested tract, Lost Cove, as a conservation property. Sewanee and the Land Trust were recognized for this ambitious conservation project through an award made by the Governor of Tennessee.
