Crystals are made up of an orderly arrangement of atoms which repeats in all three dimensions. The simplest is the cubic system where atoms are equally spaced on three perpendicular axes. Table salt, sodium chloride, is shown at the left. The cube marked in heavy lines (called the unit cell) repeats along the x, y and z axes.
