This revolving nosepiece has objectives with 5x, 20x, 50x and 100x magnification and a port for a fifth objective. Rotate the nosepiece to change magnification. Always begin with low magnification. It will make focusing easier, plus there is less chance of damage to an expensive high magnification objective by to ramming it into a sample due to the very small working distance. The 100x objective is often used with a drop of immersion oil (refractive index matching glass) placed on the sample coverslip. This removes the glass- air-glass boundry leading to clearer images. The oil is cleaned from the objective using lens paper.
