Particle size is often an important characteristic. Some pigments have both natural (ground) and synthetic (precipitated) forms. Precipitated pigments are typically one micron or less in diameter while ground pigments are usually larger than five microns diameter.

Often equally important is the distribution of particle sizes. Statistical methods are sometimes employed to determine the distribution (and may be found in the microscopy literature)
