The homogeneity (sameness) or lack there of can be an important clue in the identification of a material. For example, to the left, the pigment azurite has particles of very different sizes and contains both the blue azurite and the colorless quartz. Many natural ground pigments contain quartz. Other characteristic combinations occur which simplify materials identification. For example, chrome green is a mixture of chrome yellow and Prussian blue. Bone black may be distinguished from other carbon blacks by the presence of unreacted bone.
