If the first medium is air, the velocity is approximately the speed of light in a vacuum, a constant (c). Then
velocity of light in 2nd medium Air provides a standard to which all other refractive indices may be compared. Since light is slowed by all media except a vacuum, the index of refraction will always be greater than 1.00. |
