A virtual image is obtained when the object is less than the focal distance away from the lens. Consequently, rays do not converge on a single point. The converging lens of your eye (or a camera) is required to convert the virtual image into a real image. The distance of the image from the eye must be about 25 cm (comfortable reading distance)
