Focusing is accomplished using the coarse and fine focusing knobs. One begins with the lowest power objective and adjusts the focus first with the coarse and then the fine focusing knobs. Rotation of the knobs away from you (as indicated by the arrows in the photograph) raises the stage.

Once in focus one can go to progressively higher magnifications. Only adjustment with the fine focus should be required for the higher magnifications. Extreme caution must be exercised with the higher power objectives to prevent crashing them into the sample, damaging the sample and the expensive objective.
