Cargill meltmount 1.666 or Aroclor is usually used for particle
identification because their refractive index of 1.666 is at a convenient
point in range of the refractive indices of interest (1.5-3.1). Note that
values above 2.0 are typically for particles containing heavy atoms such
as lead, arsenic, mercury, zinc, and cadmium. Most other materials are clustered
between refractive indices of 1.5 and 1.8. |
