Cargill meltmount 1.666 or Aroclor is usually used for particle identification because their refractive index of 1.666 is at a convenient point in range of the refractive indices of interest (1.5-3.1). Note that values above 2.0 are typically for particles containing heavy atoms such as lead, arsenic, mercury, zinc, and cadmium. Most other materials are clustered between refractive indices of 1.5 and 1.8.
