Under crossed polars most particles exhibit
colors which follow the Michel-Levy chart (see birefringence). A
few exhibit anomolous polarization colors due to anomolous dispersion
of their birefringence (due to non parallel dispersion curves for the different
refractive indices). The relative rareness of this occurence makes it
a valuable tool. An example is the green appearance of red lead under crossed
polars.
