Do you wonder how to decide what to do with your summer or your life after graduation? Or, do you know exactly what you want to do and where you want to live? No matter where you are in your career development process, the Office of Career Services has the resources and assistance that you nee to help you answer the tough questions in your career planning process: "Who am I? What are my gifts? What is my place in the world?

 
 
Who am I?
  • Individual counseling is available and helps you discover your values.  Call x1121 to schedule an appointment.
  • Attend a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and/or a Strong Interests and Skills Indicator Workshop (check the calendar on TigerNet for specific dates, times and locations)
  • Think about the way your major and your future can intersect.
  • Use the resources in the OCS Library (searchable through duPont Library's Gabriel) to learn more about a variety of career areas and graduate and professional schools
  • Complete the Personal History and Inventory form and bring it into Career Services to begin the process
  • Consult the Sewanee Gateway, an extensive, searchable database of Sewanee alumni that enables you to talk to alumni from a variety of fields to test your ideas about the ways you might choose your summer...or life.

 

What are my gifts?
  • Consult our Career Planning Timetable to gauge where you are in the career planning process.
  • Through many endowed internship programs, the university funds approximately 130 paid internships each summer.  Through these experiences, you can learn what type of work seems like a natural "fit."
  • Through the Strong Interest Inventory, you can gain knowledge about a range or possible career options and learn about jobs you may not know exist.  Call x1121 for more information.
  • Individual Counseling from the Office of Career Services can also help you find your strengths.  Call x1121 to schedule an appointment .

What is my place in the world?
  • Career Excursions  Juniors and Seniors start thinking about life after Sewanee by attending a Career Excursion over Fall Break to Atlanta, New York, Washington D.C. or a city of  your choice!  Attend an alumni luncheon, interview for jobs and internships, or explore area graduate programs. Sign up by simply logging into TigerNet , and click on calendar, event type, then city networking excursion.  Upload your resume and essay into their profile in TigerNet to complete your registration. 
     
  • "Beyond the Gates: Preparing for Life and Work after Sewanee",  a program for juniors and seniors held on-capmus, provides a forum for alumni and parent volunteers to assist students preparing for summer internships and life after college.
  • Career and graduate/professional school fairs will show you the many possibilities that await you at the end of your four years. Dates are available in the calender on TigerNet.
  • Maintained recruiting relationships with companies and organizations mean that sewanee students are consistently sought as job candidates.

  • Explore and respond to job postings.  Many great opportunities are advertised, but don't limit yourself to the newspaper classifieds! Visit Sewanee's job postings web page, TigerNet and the web sites of your target companies to look for open job listings


Other ways the Office of Career Services can help you:
  • City Networking Councils in Atlanta, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, and Washinton, D.C. provide volunteers who like to advise students seeking internships or jobs in their cities.  Call x1121 for more details.
  • TigerNet is a great software resource designed to help us serve you in a more personalized way.  This is the place to look for multiple internship and job opportunities that our office learns about from alumni, parents and recruiters.  You can also see the events our office offers and sign-up online.
  • Drop-In hours is a time when no appointment is necessary.  They are Wednesday from 2-5 and Thursday from 10-12.
  • Don't have time to visit our office? "Quick Questions" at McClurg allows us to help you in the midst of your busy schedule during lunch every Tuesday.
  • Multiple workshops are offered each month.  Topics include Resume & Cover Letter writing, Graduate & Professional School Application/Admission, Internships, Interview Skills, Networking & Job Search Skills, and Creating Your First Budget.  See TigerNet for times and locations.
  • Consult the Career Services library (searchable through Gabriel) to help find answers to the questions listed above...and many others you didn't think to ask.
