It may seem a little early to start thinking about making your summer plans, but if you want a summer internship, NOW is the time to do your planning and preparation!
What is an "internship"? An internship is an opportunity to integrate career related experience into an undergraduate education by participating in planned, supervised work.
An internship can be a crucial part of the career process. Internships are available in all fields and in all types of organizations. They can be paid or unpaid. An internship is usually a learning experience and is a good way to test a potential career field. It is important to remember that many people apply for intern positions at the large, prestigious companies and that the programs are very competitive. Many small companies would be eager to have an intern either on a volunteer or paid basis.
If you are offered an unpaid internship, you can apply for funding from Sewanee! This is great leverage for you in arranging an internship with a potential internship sponsor because you can offer to work for FREE, enabling you to pursue a meaningful internship that is otherwise unpaid. Because the University will only fund meaningful work experiences (not grunt work), you'll work on REAL PROJECTS that give you insight into a career field and develop your skills.
Where do you start?
1) Create your resume- Go to the Career Services homepage (www.sewanee.edu/careerservices) to get started
2) Log onto TigerNet - TigerNet is Sewanee's database of internships and job opportunities. Also, while you are there, don't forget to update your TigerNet profile! This will help Career Services notify you of new opportunities that may be of interest to you.

ACE (A Career Exploration) Internships
Internship opportunities, in any field, brought to the attention of Career Services by alumni or friends of the University. Opportunities include internships with sponsors such as Yale University, Smith Barney, federal judges, and many others. All ACE postings are listed on TigerNet.

Aiken Taylor Internship
The Aiken Taylor Internship is an exceptional opportunity for a student from the University of the South to gain valuable experience in the field of editing and publishing. With support from the Aiken Taylor fund (in the postgraduate year) this student assists the editor and managing editor at all levels of production of the nation's oldest continuously published literary quarterly, The Sewanee Review.

Aiken Taylor Internship - Description and Application Requirements/Guidelines
Gessell Fellowship in Social Ethics
The Gessell Fellowship in Social Ethics offers funds to enable an independent research project in social theory or social ethics. The project may be an academic research paper or field experience. Projects with a local focus are particularly encouraged. Proposals should include a statement of purpose, description of the project and its methodology, a budget, and plans for evaluating the project. The award recipient completes the project during the course of the academic year, and submits a final paper or presentation.

Eligibility: Returning student in the School of Theology (alternates yearly between the College and the School of Theology)

Internship Fund Application Form: This is a new unified application for the following internship funds: Beatty Chemistry, Davis-Pinson Chemistry, Environmental Studies, FITL (Fund for Innovative Teaching & Learning), Greene Biology, McGriff-Bruton Mathematics & Computer Science Research, Mellon Environmental, Powell Arts, Raoul Conservation, and Stephenson, Yeatman Biology. Please check all funds for which you are applying, then save and upload to TigerNet, along with your other application documents. You may apply to as many funds as you wish (and for which you are eligible.) The intent of this application form is to ensure that as many students as possible are provided with funding. Those applying for the following funds do not need to include this form: Biehl, Business & Economics, Canale, Lilly, and Tonya Public Affairs.
Biehl International Research Internship Fund
A self-directed social science research internship conducted outside of the United States and other English speaking countries. Projects should facilitate substantial contact with the society to be studied and should be focused in one area, or a few closely related locales, rather than several sites. Upon their return in the Advent Semester, each recipient will be required to write a research paper under faculty supervision and to present a public talk on his or her study.

Canale Internship Fund for Community Service and Leadership
Supported by the Canale Endowment, students pursue a community service internship of their choosing. The internships are projects that benefit the greater Sewanee community, while also developing the individual intern’s leadership, communication, emotional, and analytical skills. Interns are self-directed but receive assistance from a mentor and the Outreach Office of the University. Internships take place during the academic year and interns are encouraged to spend at least 10 hours a week on their projects.

Environmental Studies Internship Fund
Through the generosity of the Brewster, Fitzsimons, Lankewicz, Leroy, Sommer-Speck, and Thomas endowments, Sewanee's Environmental Studies Program offers several stipends for environment-related summer internships within and outside of the United States. Proposed summer internships must be related to one of the following aspects of Environmental Studies: policy; ecology and biodiversity; natural resources; or environmental chemistry.

Lilly Summer Discernment Institute Internship Fund
The Lilly Summer Discernment Institute allows students to develop internships of vocational exploration in either church or church-related organizations, or within service and non-profit spheres. McGriff-Bruton Mathematics & Computer Science Research Internship Fund
Recipients of this fund receive a stipend to work on a project with a Sewanee faculty member during the summer in the fields of Mathematics/Computer Science.

Thanks to the Mellon Bridge Grant for Environmental Studies Initiative, four Sewanee students will be awarded internships that give priority to local research, including collaboration with the directors of Sewanee's Physical Plant Services, to analyze possible campus sustainability projects.

Powell Arts Internship Fund and the Patrick-Smith Arts Internship Fund
The Powell Arts Internship Fund and Patrick-Smith Arts Internship Fund provide financial assistance to undergraduate students who wish to pursue a summer internship in studio art, art history, or an art-related profession. A generous gift from Christine Powell in 2007 made possible the intership funding. Upon the completion of the internship, each recipient will be asked to write a 5-page report or give a presentation about his or her experience.

Raoul Conservation Internship Fund
The Raoul Conservation Internship Fund is designed to be flexible so that projects may be diverse in their scope. Students may work with faculty in the Department of Forestry and Geology, using the Domain to investigate topics in hydrology, forestry, geology, geoarchaeology, watershed management, etc. Students may also submit internship proposals of their own design for work on and off the Domain. Other appropriate uses of the internship stipend might include working with the National Park Service, the USDA Forest Service, the US Geological Survey, the Student Conservation Association, or other similar institutions.

Tonya Public Affairs Internship Fund
Students develop internships that enable them to be a contributor to the formation, adoption, or implementation of a policy or program which applies to the general public or to an identifiable segment of the public; -OR- the student’s work contributes to the understanding of a policy or program which applies to the general public or to an identifiable segment of the public; -OR- the student’s work contributes to the understanding of an identifiable aspect of the political system. The internship may not involve partisan political activity or social service.
