Alumni Profiles-Brian Field

Class Year
1998

Undergraduate Major
History and Education

What do you do?
Teach and Coach

How did you get your current job?
I taught for two years out of college in Mobile, Al, and then moved to Charlotte, NC to assume my current position.

What do you like about your position?
I love the fact that every day I am in the classroom with students, and each day, even each class period is a different challenge and adventure. You never have the same day as the one before. Plus, the kids keep me fresh and on my toes!

What do you dislike about your position?
Not too much. After 9 years of teaching, I absolutely love going to work in the morning. There are long hours, and it is not a job that you leave when you go home. Especially with coaching, it is an extremely demanding profession.

What kind of people do well in your career field?
Motivated, energetic, outgoing people.

What activities where you involved in while at Sewanee?
Basketball, ATO fraternity, Big People for Little People.

Did any of your summer jobs or internships influence your thinking about careers after college?
I worked basketball camps while in college, but I always knew that I wanted to teach and coach.

What advice would you give to students interested in working in your field?
Be around young people as much as possible during summers so that you know whether or not teaching is what you want to do. Also, enter the Education Program.

How can students best prepare themselves while still at Sewanee?
Enter the Education Program and take Dr. Mae Wallace's classes. She is the best teacher I have ever seen. How lucky Sewanee is to have her teaching its future teachers. Also, make sure you do your student teaching.

What would you do differently?
Nothing. I feel like I left Sewanee as prepared as a 22 year-old could be to teach. The Education Program and the student teaching opportunities really got me ready to enter the classroom.

What are your future plans?
I plan to make a career as a teacher and coach. Possibly a middle school dean of students at some point, but I want to continue to be in the classroom every day.
