THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: ITS DEVELOPMENT AND THE FUNCTIONS OF THE CELLS COMPRISING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

John R. Palisano, Ph. D.

INTRODUCTION

While the study of the immune system began with investigators like Metchnikoff and von Behring, it has only been during the last twenty years with the use of modern biological techniques that scientists have begun to elucidate the complex interaction that occurs between the cellular components of the immune system and other organ systems as well as the interaction of the immune cells with one another.

The series of lectures at this website are designed to take the reader on a journey through the workings of the immune system. It begins with the cellular interactions that occur between the cells and organs of the immune system as the embryo develops, followed by a description of the origin, selection and function of the immune cells.

At the end of the outline for each lecture posted at this website is a selected bibliography so that the reader can explore any topic in more depth. Each lecture outline also contains study questions and several projects to encourage further exploration of the major topics in each lecture.
