Sewanee Defeats Webster, 3-2, to Win Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational

(Sewanee, Tenn.) --   Sewanee senior Ryan Davis’ goal off a corner kick in double overtime gave Sewanee a 3-2 win against Webster Univ. (Mo.) in the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational final in men’s soccer here Sunday.

Davis’ winning goal, his second in two matches, came off a corner kick by senior Andrew North in the 108th minute to give the Tigers their second straight Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational championship trophy and the eighth in the 10-year history of the event.

Sewanee coach Matt Kern said that "the home crowd was definitely a plus for us and our guys gave them some exciting and entertaining college soccer this weekend.’’

Sewanee, 2-0 and ranked 25th in the nation, opened the scoring as Andy Leffler scored in the 7th minute on an assist from David Allen.

Webster scored twice in a four-minute span (9th and 13th minutes) for a 2-1 lead at the 13th minute of the match.

Sewanee tied the match at 2-2 on North’s successful penalty kick in the 26th minute and the match stayed that way for the next 82 minutes.

Sewanee outshot Webster 30-9, and held a 20-3 advantage in corners.

NEXT MATCH: Sewanee competes in the SCAC-UAA Challenge in Chicago, Sept. 7-8. Sewanee plays Washington Univ. (Mo.) Sept. 7 and Chicago on Sept. 8.

NOTES: Tourney stats ... Andrew North had three assists … Ryan Davis had four goals, including two match-winning goals .. Sewanee has won three straight overtime matches, including two last season … Sewanee has a modest five-match win streak, including three wins at the conclusion of the 2000 season ...
