Men's Soccer:

Sewanee in First Place in the SCAC

(SEWANEE, Tenn.) --   In the 11-year history of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Sewanee men's soccer team has never been in first place this late in the season. Until now.

Not since at least 1994 has perennial national power and five-time SCAC champion Trinity found itself in third place in the SCAC. Trinity (No. 8 nationally) has lost on the road at DePauw and at home last Saturday to Rhodes, 1-0.

SCAC STANDINGS: The Sewanee men's soccer team is 5-1 in the SCAC, with a league-leading 15 points. Three road SCAC matches stand between the Tigers and their first SCAC title and the school's first NCAA bid.

POLLS: Sewanee is 4th in the Region and not ranked by the NSCAA.

Overall, Sewanee plays five of its last six matches, including non-conference matches, on the road.

Sat. Oct 13 at Centre (6-3-2, 2-3-1); Coach Matt Kern has never beaten Centre in Danville, Ky. Overall, the last time Sewanee won at Danville was a 5-1 OT win in 1989, the year before Kern arrived at Sewanee.

Fri. Oct. 19 HOMECOMING - Sewanee vs. Fisk 3 p.m.

Fri. Oct 26 at DePauw (8-3-0, 2-0-0); In 2000, DePauw defeated Sewanee, 1-0, at Sewanee and knocked them out of the NCAA. In 1999, Sewanee tied DePauw, 1-1, in Greencastle and kept them out of the NCAA. In 1998, DePauw defeated Sewanee, 1-0, at Sewanee. DePauw was third in the SCAC and went to the NCAA. Sewanee was fourth and stayed home.

Sun. Oct. 28 at Rose-Hulman (0-9-0, 0-2-0)

"Our destiny is in our hands," said Sewanee coach Matt Kern. "We win out in the SCAC and we go to the NCAA. On the night of the NCAA selection call, I want our team to not wonder IF we are going, but whether we play at home or on the road."
