Sewanee at Wilmington (Ohio) College

(Sewanee, TN.) --   The University of the South men's soccer team will play at Wilmington (Ohio) College on Wed. Nov. 7 in a first round match of the NCAA Div. III Men's Soccer Championship.

Sewanee, 15-2 overall and winners of a school record 11 straight matches, is playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time in the 34-year history of the men's program.

Wilmington is 16-2-2 and was ranked 18th in last week's Div. III poll, while Sewanee was No.30. Wilmington lost to Otterbein, 2-0, in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament final on Saturday.

NCAA FIELD: Sewanee is the only school from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference to make the 44-team field, while Wilmington is one of three teams from the OAC to make the field. John Carroll and Otterbein are in the Great Lakes Region and both play first round matches on Wed.

NCAA TOURNEY EXPERIENCE: Wilmington has been to the NCAA tournament four of the last five years, including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2000.

WHAT'S NEXT: The winner of the Sewanee-Wilmington match advances to the South Region semifinals and plays Roanoke College at Greensboro (N.C.) College this weekend, Nov. 9-11. The Region finals will also be at Greensboro this weekend.

SEWANEE’S MOST FAMOUS SOCCER ALUM: Kyle Rote, Jr. (C’72) lettered three years at Sewanee is the school’s most famous soccer alum. He was captain of the 1971 team. He currently lives in Memphis and is a sports agent.

RECORDS: The 2001 Tigers also hold school season records for best winning percentage (88.2%), consecutive wins (11) and fewest goals allowed (13).

NOTES: Sewanee has an 11-match win streak, dating back to Sept. 21st. Sewanee has posted seven straight shutouts and nine overall ..
